It’s a crying shame that Croteam took the game’s initial poor reception as a sign to abandon every single design decision they made here, effectively freezing the series in time. It also makes the world of Serious Sam feel vast and alive like never before or after, sending Sam on a planet-hopping adventure that culminates in an epic multi-stage assault on the Mental’s home base. The story is full of the silliest, most random gags imaginable, and while some might consider them childish, no highbrow humor can match their pure LOLs-per-minute potential. ![]() The vehicles’ sections in particular lead to some carnage of seriously fulfilling proportions.Īnd sure, core fans who like their difficulty serious might find it lacking in terms of tough encounters or insidious enemy placement, as well as criticize it for op shotguns (those things have such low spread, they can almost work as sniper rifles), but for an average player the game strikes a great balance between feeling challenged and feeling strong. The core gameplay is extremely satisfying: the guns feel different but always powerful, while the battles are large-scale and epic yet never overstay their welcome. With 42 levels split across 7 highly distinct worlds, it is unparalleled in variety and scope, constantly keeping you engaged with new enemies, new situations and new memorable environments. A hot take, I know, but I’ll proudly stand by it, because this gem doesn’t get any less awesome, no matter what year I replay it in. ![]() The best Serious Sam game by far, and quite possibly the best arcade FPS experience in existence.
